Slow down and really receive!
I heard this phrase a few years ago in a prophetic word, and it has stuck with me. Since then, I have been trying to decelerate!
When I do manage to slow down, I often find that God is right there – present in the details of my life – waiting to be found. However, it is easy to miss Him when I am in a hurry, caught up in my list of things to do.
One morning this week, I had a list of people and things I wanted to pray for. As I started to pray, I sensed the Lord’s Presence. In that moment, I knew I had to forget about my list and be still, so He could share His heart with me.
We need to slow down so that we can really receive …
· all He wants to say to us
· all that He wants to give us
· and most of all, His very own Presence with us.
So how do we do this? Here are three ideas:
All He wants to say
Take a break from social media: Let’s try this – next time we have a spare moment, instead of reaching for our phones, let’s listen for His still small voice! Once a week, Claire and I try to take a day off from social media and emails. When we first did this, I found it really hard. I realised how addicted I had become!
All He wants to give
Take time to be thankful: One practical thing I often do is to think of three things I’m thankful for, and write about them in my journal - usually things that have happened in the last 24 hours. Very often, when I do this, I call to mind ways in which He has been good to me, that I might otherwise have forgotten about. I frequently find this helps me to experience afresh how much He loves me!
Take a five-minute holiday: I learnt this idea from Bill Johnson. He writes, “One of the more meaningful parts of my life is the five-minute vacations I take. They can happen any time or anywhere … I will sit down and generally close my eyes and pray something like this, God, I’m going to sit here quietly, just to be the object of your love. The flow of His love for us is huge, likened to the water that flows over Niagara Falls – except Niagara is too small. Becoming aware of that love and experiencing that love is wonderful beyond words. It has the side benefit of driving out all fear.”
I hope you found this article helpful. If you did, or if you have other ideas about how to slow down and receive, I would love to hear from you!
